The 1914 Christmas Truce
The "Christmas truce" is a term used to describe several brief, unofficial cessations of hostilities that occurred on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day between German and British or French troops in World War I, particularly that between British and German troops stationed along the Western Front during Christmas 1914.
For more, see the Imperial War Museum or see The Christmas Truce.

Vote Now to Put the Academy on the National Agenda
Change.org, a non-partisan non-profit organization, is sponsoring a nationwide contest to find the best citizen-driven ideas. The top ten vote-getters will be presented to President Obama on Inauguration Day, and Change.org will launch a lobbying effort to get them passed in Congress. The Academy is currently in 5th place. Please help the Academy win this contest by clicking here - it will take just a minute.
Draft Blueprint Available Online
The second draft of the Academy Blueprint is now available online. With the help of dozens of experts in higher education, the government, and the military, the Academy has put together a plan for how to get the institution off the ground after the congressional bill passes. A special thank you goes to our research assistants: Matthew Holbreich, Jonathan Silver, and David Soo.
We Need Volunteers!
As we prepare for the next year, we are putting together working groups of volunteers to help mobilize supporters, win co-sponsors, host events, and more. Please contact Chris Myers Asch if you are interested in helping us make the Academy happen.

"I am a big supporter [of the Public Service Academy]. I am looking forward to seeing it happen." - Rahm Emanuel, Chief of Staff, President-Elect Obama
High-Profile Academy Supporters Take New Positions in Obama Administration
The November elections certainly have helped the Public Service Academy's prospects in Washington. Almost all of the 146 co-sponsors of our bill will be returning to office, and a number of our most prominent supporters will be taking new positions in the executive branch. Academy supporters who are now likely to hold powerful positions within the Obama administration include our biggest champion on Capitol Hill (Hillary Clinton), strong co-sponsors of our bill (Joe Biden and Rahm Emanuel), and key endorsers of our initiative (Tom Daschle and Bill Richardson). With friends in such high places, we look forward to making progress on our bill.
"Outlook for Public Service Academy Brightens"
The election results and the prominence of Academy supporters has attracted a fair bit of media attention and speculation. More and more observers are realizing that this idea not only has serious merit but also has the potential to become a reality quite soon.

Military Leaders, College Presidents, and Good Government Groups Join Academy Movement
The Academy has attracted the support of more than a hundred military leaders, college presidents, and public interest groups from across the country. One of our National Youth Council members, Rasheda Gilyard, has been doggedly pursuing such endorsements, and she helped us win a string of important endorsements from: Campus Progress, Common Cause, and Democracy Matters.
We added the presidents of the University of Virginia, Hendrix College, and Martin University - we have more than 60 college presidents behind our effort. We also continue to win strong support from the military. In the past month, more than a dozen more retired military officers added their names to our list, including: Gerald E. Galloway, Brigadier General, U.S. Army (Ret.) and former Dean. U.S. Military Academy; John A. Hurley, Brigadier General, U.S. Air Force Reserve (Ret.); Larry R. Marsh, Rear Admiral, (U.S. Navy, Ret.); and William Tuttle, General, U.S. Army (Ret.).
Thank you for your continued support. We know that these are tough economic times, and we appreciate any contribution that you can make to our effort.
Onward!

Happy Thanksgiving from the U.S. Public Service Academy!
Happy Thanksgiving from the U.S. Public Service Academy!
What We Are Thankful For...In addition to our family and friends, we also are very thankful for all of the support we have received this past year, and for the potential that the new year holds. We strongly believe that 2009, with champions like Joe Biden, Rahm Emanuel, and Hillary Clinton, along with strong bi-partisan support in Congress, could be the year that the U.S. Public Service Academy becomes a reality.
In order to succeed we are planning events such as congressional hearings, a youth conference, and Hill Days, and we would also like to hire interns to serve in the spring, summer, and fall...but we need your help to make all of this happen. To fund these programs, we need to raise $30,000 online before December 31.
Will you help set the Academy's table for success in 2009?
Donate now by clicking here!
We sincerely thank you for your support. What can you bring to the Academy's Thanksgiving table?
Let's check our list and see what we still need...
1) Turkey and Tofurkey - check
2) Sweet potatoes - check
3) Gravy - check
4) Dinner rolls - check
5) Pumpkin pie - check
6) Couch to sleep on after dinner - check
7) Tax-deductible donations to support the U.S. Public Service Academy - still needed!
Since November 14 we have raised $2,030 towards our goal of $30,000 by December 31 - a good start, but in order to set the table for success in 2009 we still need lots of help!

London, England
On November 3, 2008, I visited London
and had lunch with Kathy Amen
and we ate at the Globe Theatre!
Here are some pictures of the restaurant:

They are also working on the thatched roof:
It's London's only thatched roof, and it is on a reproduction of London's oldest theatre: the Globe which dates back to Shakespearian times. The open-air theatre is based on the descriptions of the original design from 1559 where Shakespeare worked and presented his plays. The reproduction was built in 1996, funded by Sam Wanamaker, who dedicated 20 years to its creation.
But it's time for some restoration work so the original Master Thatchers have come back with a team of ten men to work on the iconic roof for the next 4 weeks. They will use 800 bundles of sedge (a grass-like plant from the Norfolk Broads), 10,000 English hazel spars, 2,500 feet of liggers (thatching strips) and 600 litres of fire retardant fluid.

Family trip
One more short day trip to describe and then we're back to the big city for a few posts. This one was really special for me and my sister. We visited the place where our father had been stationed for the most of his World War II service in England. The airfield was called Earls Colne and it's not just been left to moulder. It's been turned into a thriving business/light manufacturing/recreation area by an enterprising and imaginative family, the Hobbs'.
